Lash isn’t taking it well, “You want me to let you go on some faraway expedition to find someone who may or may not still be alive? That sounds quite absurd from my perspective.”

“Did I mention that he lives at your school?” I ask.

“I must have missed that,” Lash says, “That makes all the difference, now doesn’t it?”

“Look,” I say, “He may have materials, weapons, maybe even armor. He could be a valuable asset.”

“So what do I get out of it?” Lash asks.

I try to contain my anger since I’ve explained this five times by now, “You get a head start on taking back your planet, and you get a nice dinner.”

“Say that last part again please,” he says, “The part about the dinner.”

“He’s got cows, pigs, chickens, we can bring some food back here and I’ll even cook if you want.”

“You had me at dinner,” Lash says as though he’s the funniest human being in history, “I’ll send you over as soon as I can.”

“Wait,” I ask, “You’re not sending Sully?”

“Well of course not! You know the man, it’d be much smarter to send you.”

“Okay, sure, happy to help!” I say. Oh shit, we’re in trouble, I think. That wasn’t part of the plan. Meth will recognize me, that’s going to make this job a whole lot harder.

“Wonderful,” Lash says coldly.

“I’m sorry?” I ask, “Did I say something?”

Lash’s demeanor shifts suddenly, “No, no, of course not, just get ready to go, I’m sending you in one of my signature ships, the pride and joy of my fleet, the brand-new, unreleased X-2 Watchman! Of course, I’ve had Sully specially program it so that you are only able to fly from here to JLU. You will not be going anywhere else in my plane.”

“Yes sir,” I say, suppressing my internal cringe. I feel so fake in talking to Lash, but if I’m going to escape, I’ll do whatever it takes. Lash walks out onto the balcony and gestures to a plane sitting in the middle of the hangar.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Lash says, sounding as though he’s about to cry.

“Yeah, it is,” I reply, and for the first time in quite a while, I’m not lying to him. The exterior is similar to the first Watchman, but more streamlined. The paint is a lovely shade of dark blue.

“The most obvious additions are a brand-new cloaking device and space travel capabilities,” Lash explains, “It’s quite a nice little trinket.” I nod but don’t say anything. I climb down the stairs and walk toward the plane with a sort of wonder in my eyes. As I climb up the loading ramp, Sully brushes past me and whispers something.

It’s quick, and it’s quiet, but I hear it clearly, “Get out of here.” I want to ask him what he means but I’m worried about jeopardizing the whole thing, so I don’t say a word.
